About Wheelhome

Wheelhome was founded in 1986 by Stephen Wheeler in South Weald, a small village near Brentwood in Essex, where every camper is still hand-built to this day. What started as one man’s passion for making the cleverest possible use of the smallest possible space has grown into over three decades of award-winning innovation in compact campervans and towable campers.

From the very beginning, Stephen has never followed the conventional campervan playbook. While other converters stuck with the obvious base vehicles and predictable layouts, Wheelhome took a different path — turning a Suzuki Wagon R shopping car into the tiny Vikestian campervan, converting a Ford Galaxy people carrier into the Millennium, and building the much-loved Skamper on the little Fiat Fiorino. The company’s very first model, the Daneste, was named after members of the Wheeler family, and went on to win Motorcaravan of the Year — twice.

That same restless thinking led Wheelhome to go fully electric. Since 2022, we’ve been developing and testing all-electric camping vehicles, and we no longer offer petrol models. Our Vikenze III-e, built on the Vauxhall Combo-e Life, won the Best Campervan Innovation Award 2023 from Campervan magazine (part of the MMM and What Motorhome group). The judges noted that Wheelhome had shown larger brands how electric campervans could be done properly.

More recently, Stephen’s travels in Iceland inspired the Dashaway range — first the ERC, a roof camper purpose-built for the Tesla Model 3 as a concept, and then the ECT, a lightweight towable camper that can be towed by almost any car. Both were born from real-world adventure: Stephen took the ERC prototype on a 3,500-mile trip through Holland, Germany, Denmark and Iceland to prove it worked before offering it to anyone else.

Every Wheelhome is gas-free, with all-electric cooking powered by lithium batteries, a powerful inverter and solar panels — so you can cook off-grid without needing a campsite hook-up. Our campervans are small enough to fit in your garage, low enough to pass under two-metre height barriers, and classified as cars on French motorways. Yet they still provide comfortable beds, a proper kitchen, fridge access and room to use a Porta Potti — even when the beds are made up.

Stephen personally delivers every Wheelhome to your door, anywhere on the UK mainland, with a thorough and unhurried handover. That’s been the way since the beginning, and it’s not going to change.
